I have never understood how the hair that grows out of our scalp, the hair that we can’t help but have, makes some people so upset.
In a previous blog post, I shared how I used to be nervous about wearing my natural hair to interviews. With age, I stopped caring about what a potential employer may think about my mane. I always say if someone can’t accept me for me, then I don’t belong there!
Black and brown people do NOT fit into the typical European standard and I know that’s what gets everyone so riled up. We’re made to be embarrassed of our curly, kinky locks, ashamed even.
Taking care of our mane is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. I read an article once that said slaves were only allowed ONE day a week to take care of their hair, hence the term “wash DAY.”
There is beautiful history in our hair and I’ll be damned if someone thinks they can come in and try to erase that.
QOTW: What are some reasons that you think Black hair is seen as unprofessional? What makes our hair so “threatening” to others? Let’s discuss.
Until next time, xx 💋
