How to care for your hair with a protective style

It’s very seldom that I wear a protective style. Within the years I’ve been natural, I’ve only worn a protective style twice; once in 2018 I got faux locs and in 2019, I got braids for my graduation. While I clearly don’t have much experience taking care of protected hair, I’ll share what I’ve done and what's worked for me.

With my locs, I found that there wasn’t much I could do being that my hair was tucked away. I twisted my hair and wrapped the crotchet locs around it so there was no way for me to get to it unless I took out the style.

One thing about me, I'm not rockin hair that's longer than shoulder length, lmao. I just can't sleep with long hair, it makes me soo uncomfortable. I do want to try getting braids that are bra strap length sometime in the future.

Not the best picture with the cut locs but it's the best one I could find

Since I knew I wouldn't be able to tend to my hair like normal, before I got my locs, I properly moisturized my hair. I used leave-in, a cream and sealed in the moisture with an oil, using more of everything than usual. When I took out my locs weeks later, my hair wasn’t the least bit dry; it was still very moisturized.

With my braids, I was able to keep them in for a month or so because I could properly tend to my hair.

Most of the pictures I have of my braids are associated with graduation lol

Whenever it was time for wash day, I’d wash and condition as usual, really focusing on my scalp. Afterwards, I’d take a t-shirt and remove all excess water. Then, I’d get all of my products (leave-in and a cream) and lightly squeeze them in so I wouldn't cause too much frizz. When my hair would completely dry, I’d moisturize my scalp and that was it!

I later cut my braids even shorter and I absolutely loved it

Just to reiterate, I am no expert on caring for protected hair; I’m simply sharing what works for me, in hopes that it’ll help you too.

QOTW:

If you’re someone who frequently does protective styles, is there anything you do differently to care for your hair? Make sure to share!

Until the week after next, xo
