Hey, y’all! This week’s post is more of a check-in to make sure y’all are properly tending to your hair! It’s too easy to slack off and leave your hair all dry and tangled; believe me, I know. Here’s a checklist of things you should be doing throughout the week:
☐ Moisturize your hair
A picture of my hair thoroughly moisturized
Even if your hair feels moisturized to the touch, what about when you part it? There have been countless times where I’d touch my curls about four days after a twistout and was like wow, how is my hair still so hydrated? Chile, when I’d part my hair, it’d be a completely different story, lol. The inside of my hair would be fairly dry. Make sure that every strand, from roots to ends, is moisturized.
☐ Protect your hair at night
Bonnets are a must-have for me
Whether it’s putting your hair in a pineapple, retwisting it or whatever you usually do, make sure to sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or put on your silk or satin bonnet before sleeping.
☐ Chill with the puffs!
Anyone who knows me would side-eye me for saying this because I always wear puffs but I’m trying to not style my hair like that as often. Why? Because constantly putting strain on your strands, especially your edges, can cause breakage. I thankfully haven’t experienced any damage but if I don’t take my own advice, I will!
☐ Spritz your hair with water
Whenever I have my hair in small pineapples, I usually spritz it a little with water just to loosen it up. Don’t spritz so much to the point where your hair shrinks up, though.
☐ Deep condition
I personally don’t do this every week; I do it about two to three times a month. If moisture is something you struggle with, you should think about deep conditioning every week. There are some pretty good curl masks out there that help with moisture and repairing your strands. I use CURLS Reparative Hair Mask from the Blueberry Bliss Collection or their Curl Mask from the Poppin’ Pineapple Collection. You can always make your own mask as well.
☐ Oil/moisturize scalp
Currently, I use Kreyol Essence's Haitian Black Castor Oil and it's really helped me with my dry, itchy scalp. Before, I used CURLS So So Fresh Vitamin C+ Mint Scalp Treatment from their Poppin’ Pineapple Collection and I loved it! Both are good but the Haitian Black Castor Oil works better for me. Make sure to rub in your oil/scalp treatment well! ☐ Leave your hair alone but don't neglect it!
When your hair is out, you'll find yourself just playing in it for no reason, lol. I’ve caught myself pulling on my curls, twisting them around my finger and simply unnecessarily touching my hair. Too much manipulation can cause breakage. They say touching your face throughout the day can cause breakouts; think of that for your hair but instead of breakouts, you’ll get breakage. Chizi Duru, a natural hair YouTuber you should definitely check out, would pick at her hair and it caused her a good amount of breakage. Long story short, like I said, leave your hair alone! I hope this checklist was helpful! QOTW: What are some things you do throughout the week that I didn’t include on my list? Please share!
